Approximately fifty automobiles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state initial examinations show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the incident," they stated.
City officials said they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A senior political figure commented the vandalism made him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the killing of nine victims by a gunman targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
